Ally McCoist revealed after Rangers' 4-1 win over Dunfermline that he hopes to finalise Daniel Cousin's return to Ibrox early next week.

The Scottish champions are awaiting paperwork from the Gabon Football Association in order to re-sign the striker who left for Hull in 2008.

Cousin was in the stand at East End Park as Rangers fought back from behind to earn a 4-1 win over Dunfermline.

McCoist said: "We are still waiting on some paperwork coming through from the Gabon FA.

"I'm told it should hopefully be here at the beginning of the week, Monday or Tuesday. Daniel will come in and train on Monday.

"As yet he hasn't signed but we are very, very hopeful we can get that done."

Andy Kirk fired Dunfermline into a shock lead before David Healy levelled and Lee McCulloch grabbed his first goal of the season.

Goals from Sone Aluko and Salim Kerkar then secured what proved to be a comfortable victory for Rangers in the end.

McCulloch - who played as a striker earlier in his career but is now known more as a defensive midfielder - started up front and McCoist was thrilled with his contribution.

He said: "I thought McCulloch played that centre-forward role exceptionally well.

"I thought he did that job superbly, he led the line really well. His goal capped a wonderful performance.

"The boys will be asked if required to fill in in different positions because it's all about getting results and the team doing well and maintaining the challenge at the top of the league.

"Let's not forget, Lee McCulloch started his career as a centre-forward - and a pretty good one at that.

"Team results and us winning is by far the most important thing."

Asked if McCulloch could be asked to partner Cousin, McCoist added: "I wouldn't like to play against them, I know that!

"I don't know, I would need to have a think about it.

"They would certainly be two bigger centre-forwards and it would be a real physical presence in our team. But we have got options."

The win allowed Rangers to move back to within a point of SPL leaders Celtic ahead of their game against Inverness later in the day.

McCoist said: "We've got a squad of players who know what it's all about and they know what's required and they know what it's going to take to hopefully retain the title.

"It ain't going to be easy. Celtic are on a great run of form, that is very evident. But we have done it before and we believe we can do it again."

The result means Dunfermline are still bottom of the table but boss Jim McIntyre said: "If a team is devoid of confidence, they wouldn't start the game the way we started.

"It's the Old Firm we were playing today and we won't be judged against them. We will be judged against the teams round about us.

"We've got every confidence the boys can stay in the league, there is no doubt about that."

However, they could be set for an injury blow after Mark Kerr was forced out of the action.

McIntyre added: "He will go to the hospital and get an x-ray. We don't know to be honest. He said he heard something.

"I don't know if it's a bone issue or whatever, I don't want to comment until I know the facts."
